Belgo Food Review

A steaming pot of mussels accompanied by a bowl of fresh, crisp golden frites, washed down with a pint of Belgian beer - sound tempting? Then do as DV8 did this month and head to Belgo on the high street. We were looked after by restaurant manager Nick, who explained that the true beauty of Belgian food is its sublime simplicity. Belgo certainly subscribes to that theory, using typically traditional recipes, cooking methods and ingredients; think leeks, potatoes, fennel, turnips and radishes, combined with various herbs and cream to name but a few. With that in mind, we kept it simple; my partner couldn't resist the Mariniere mussels, which are steamed with white wine, garlic, cream, celery & onion, while I opted for rotisserie chicken with a creamy leek and mustard sauce. Both dishes were served with Belgo's famous frites and creamy mayonnaise - heaven!

Obviously we just had to sample some of the beers to compliment our meals. Favourites included the Tripel Karmeliet (a light bodied, fruity and slightly spiced blonde ale), and a pale blonde specialty ale; Brugse Zot Blond (which translates to the 'Fool of Bruges', and at 6% a few of these may just bring out your foolish side!). Most surprising however was the Mongozo Banana, a fruit beer with an incredibly strong banana aroma, but pleasantly lighter flavour - a great alternative to dessert if you have no room left after your meal! Belgo is famous for many things; mussels, frites and obviously, lots and lots of beer. There is also the famous "Beat the Clock promotion" which is available Monday to Friday from 5-7pm. You pay the price of the time you order; order at 5 o'clock and only pay £5! Belgo is also celebrating Valentine's Day with not one, but 3 whole days of love and a special 3 course menu for all the lovers out there. They say that mussels are a natural aphrodisiac, so what more could you want for the perfect Valentine's date?!
